GC Bf 110G-4 Night Fighter pack
by Mathias Pommerien

Interims release. Included are 11 versions of the Messerschmitt Bf110G-4 nightfighter.
These include standard G-4 aircraft, G-4/R3 and G-4/R8 variants as well as various field modifications
and personal planes of a number of Luftwaffe nightfighter aces and visual representations of basically all radar variants that have been in use on the Bf110G-4 during the war.
We are sitting on these model longer than a year now so we thought it might be about time to release them, inspite being not entirely finished.
Just check the beta release notes of the Johnen plane we have released earlier this year.
(The Johnen plane btw is included with some xdp bugfixes).
Flight and damage models are based on a beta version that Gregory Pierson of AvHistory has kindly passed on to me. Please accept that these may not be entirely tuned either, I just didn't want to bother the poor fella again, considering his workload caused by his MAW involvement.
Also note that there is a brandnew set of Bf110's in the work which will be released as part of the free Mediterranean Airwar addon so don't expect future updates to the models included to this package.
While the new up and comming models will set the mark do we feel that these older models will serve you quite well for the time being.

INSTALLATION: PLEASE READ

Install the AvHistory guns & weapons pack from the AvHistory Files at Sim-Outhouse
and the Groundcrew Bf110G-2 shared files that you can get HERE.

Please follow the "Bf110G-2 shared files" install instructions carefully, particularly the notes on the effects installation.
NOTE: it's important to install the Bf110G-2 shared files before installing the nightfighters!
Next unzip the file gc_bf110g4_nightfighters.zip into your CFS3 main directory.
When asked to overwrite existing files answer with yes.

TIP: There may be issues when installing the Bf110G-2 shared files if you have more than one CFS3 installation and you wish to install into one of your non standard paths, or you just wish to install into a dummy folder first. That is because the Installer will only allow you to install into the original CFS3 installation.
To come around the issue do the following:
a) Locate your original CFS3 folder which is usually C:\\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 3
b) Right-click on your original CFS3 folder and select "rename".
c) Right-click again and select "copy".
d) Now rename the folder to something else.
e) Create a dummy folder in the same path and past the name of your original CFS3 folder into it.
f) Next copy and past the cfs3.exe from your original and renamed CFS3 folder into the new dummy folder.
g) The shared files installer should now automatically install into your dummy folder.
h) When done installing, rename your dummy folder to something else, rename your original CFS3 folder back to it's native name.
i)You can now copy and past or drag-drop the content of the dummy folder into the CFS3 installation of your choice.
Just make sure that you keep the folder structure intact as is, means, do not move subfolders around or delete content or other silly things.

DOCUMENTATION:

A couple of MS WORD documents compiled by Peter J. Harris can be found in the folder
"your CFS 3 folder\ GroundCrew\BF110G\Nightfighter",
dealing with Bf110G-4 production variants and radar installations as used on the G-4.

How to use the upwards firing cannons (G-4/R3 field mods and G-4/R8):
It's recommended to configure your CFS3 to fire guns and cannons separately from within the control options menu. The upwards firing cannons are then triggered by the gun button, the forward armament is triggered by the cannon button. This makes shure that you can use your joystick's hatswitch with your thumb to aim the upper gunsight but have the finger free to trigger the schräge Musik

Adjusting the upper gunsight was a problem in real life, and so it is in CFS3. Since you fire almost vertical to the direction of flight you'll notice that the bullet stream will go either fore or aft of the recticule, depending on airspeed and distance to target. The gunsight is calibrated to 320km/h indicated airspeed at 15.000 feet with the target fairly 150-250 feet above you. Coming in fighter-style at high speed from an angle will not work all that good. Using the schräge Musik is more of a precision kind of work. Come in slow from below to stay out of sight of the Brit bomber's rear defense, line up with your target at same speed and course fairly 150 feet below. Having your aircraft trimmed well helps greatly as does being able to fly straight and level.
Aim for the wing fuel tanks, fire a short but precise burst. Using this method was pretty succesfull back then, pilots having 6 confirmed kills per missions was not unusual. You don't want to try this in bright daylight against US bombers though
